Third Sunday events are a vibrant part of the life of the Meeting. All events take place at The Open House on Denison University campus starting at 10:00 AM.
On the third Sunday of every month, Granville Friends Meeting provides special “First Day School” programs for children and teens. The children and teens join the adults in the first several minutes of silent Meeting for Worship, before retreating with their respective program coordinators. The children explore values of love, peace, truth, simplicity and more through age-appropriate discussions of Bible passages and Quaker writings, as well as art, music, and games. The teens typically agree upon and discuss a religious or spiritual book, chapter by chapter, facilitated by the teen program coordinator. Meeting for Worship and the children’s and teens’ programs last about one hour.
Following Meeting for Worship, the children and teens enjoy social time while the adults hold Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business. This monthly business meeting is our opportunity to discuss how to distribute the Meeting’s resources, care for each other, reach out to the local community, interact with Quaker organizations, and relate to the wider world. Visitors are welcome to stay for the business meeting, which typically lasts around one hour.
Following Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business, everyone gathers for Potluck, a time to enjoy fellowship and a casual meal. Any contribution of food or drink to share is appreciated, but not required. We respect The Open House policy that all food is vegetarian (eggs and dairy are allowed). The Open House kitchen offers place settings, serving utensils, a refrigerator and range.
